Types of rabies vaccine

Pre-exposure vaccination may be considered for people whose work, travel, or activities could bring regular contact with rabies-infected animals. It prepares the immune system before an incident, but a bite or scratch still needs medical advice.

Post-exposure protection is urgent after a possible contact. It can include vaccine and, for some exposures, rabies immunoglobulin placed around the wound. The choice depends on the animal, the contact, the wound, previous vaccination, and whether the animal can be assessed safely. Rabies is preventable after exposure when care begins promptly, but symptoms are a medical emergency.

Wash the wound immediately with running water and soap, then seek urgent medical care even if the mark looks small. Do not wait for symptoms or rely on an internet schedule. Tell the clinician when the contact happened, where it occurred, which animal was involved, whether saliva touched broken skin, and whether you have received rabies vaccine before. Avoid handling the animal again; local authorities may advise on observation or testing.

Seek urgent assessment after any bite, scratch, or saliva contact that could involve a rabid animal, particularly when the skin is broken or the contact is near the face, head, neck, or hands. Go immediately for worsening wound redness, swelling, fever, severe pain, trouble swallowing, confusion, or unusual sensitivity to air or water. These later symptoms require emergency care.
