Types of Psoriasis

Plaque psoriasis causes raised, well-defined areas covered by dry scale, often on elbows, knees, scalp, or the lower back. Guttate psoriasis produces many small drop-like spots, sometimes after an infection. Inverse psoriasis affects folds such as the groin or underarms, where friction and moisture can make the skin smooth and intensely red rather than heavily scaly.

Pustular psoriasis produces pus-filled bumps on red skin and may be localised or widespread. Erythrodermic psoriasis causes extensive redness and peeling with loss of the skin's protective barrier, making it an emergency pattern. Psoriasis may also affect nails or joints; symptoms such as swollen fingers or persistent joint stiffness should be reported.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, keep showers comfortable rather than very hot, and avoid picking scale or scratching until the skin breaks. Track new medicines, illnesses, stressors, and areas involved because these details help a clinician assess flares. Treatment depends on the pattern and body sites, so do not assume one cream suits every type.

Arrange review for a new persistent rash, troublesome itch, cracking, peeling, or scaling, especially when the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek urgent care for widespread redness, rapid peeling, pus-filled lesions over much of the body, fever, chills, dehydration, or feeling faint.
