Types of Nd:YAG Laser

Long-pulsed Nd:YAG devices deliver energy over a longer pulse and are commonly used to heat deeper targets such as hair follicles or selected blood vessels. Shorter pulse modes can deliver energy rapidly and may be chosen for particular pigment or vascular concerns. Q-switched or very short-pulse systems use a different delivery approach for selected pigment targets. The same wavelength does not make every device or treatment interchangeable: spot size, cooling, fluence and pulse duration shape how energy reaches tissue. The correct setting depends on the target, skin tone and treatment area.

A clinician should identify the target before selecting a mode. For hair reduction, the skin is assessed for tanning, pigment and hair characteristics; Nd:YAG may be considered when a longer wavelength is appropriate. For nail concerns, the clinician must first confirm what is causing the nail change because laser is not a substitute for diagnosis. Tell the provider about recent sun exposure, medicines, scars, pigment changes and previous laser reactions. Follow instructions about shaving, cleansing and sun protection.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, swelling, blistering, crusting or colour change is increasing or failing to settle. Seek medical advice for spreading redness, discharge or fever. Do not treat a changing pigmented lesion without an appropriate examination first. Sudden visual symptoms, severe facial swelling or breathing difficulty after any procedure require urgent medical help.

Ask which Nd:YAG mode is proposed, what target it is intended to affect, how your skin tone and recent tanning alter the plan, and what cooling and eye protection will be used. Ask how the target diagnosis was established and which aftercare symptoms are expected.
