Types of Laser Hair Removal

Short answer
Laser hair removal types mainly differ by wavelength, cooling and pulse settings, which influence how the device targets pigment and protects skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Device choice
- Depends on skin tone, hair pigment, area and settings
- Before treatment
- Avoid waxing or plucking and disclose tanning
- Hair response
- Pigmented hair generally absorbs laser energy more readily
How the main types differ
Alexandrite lasers use a shorter wavelength and are often selected for lighter skin and dark hair after assessment. Diode lasers use a different wavelength and can be adjusted for a wider range of skin tones. Nd:YAG lasers use a longer wavelength that penetrates more deeply and is commonly considered when the skin contains more pigment. None of these labels alone determines suitability: hair colour, thickness, treatment site, tanning, medicines and cooling also matter. Laser energy works best when hair pigment absorbs the light; very light, grey or red hair may respond less predictably.
Preparing for treatment
A qualified practitioner should examine the area, ask about tanning and medicines, and perform a cautious test when appropriate. Avoid plucking or waxing before a session because the follicle needs to be present; follow the clinic’s shaving instructions instead. Protect treated skin from strong sun and tell the practitioner about recent tanning, active irritation, scars or a history of pigment changes. Laser treatment may also be discussed for unwanted hair linked with hirsutism, or for recurrent razor bumps and ingrown hairs, but the underlying condition may need separate care.
When to seek care
Contact the clinic if redness, swelling, blistering, crusting or pain is worsening rather than settling. Seek prompt medical advice for spreading redness, pus, fever or severe swelling. Delay treatment and request an assessment if the area has an active rash, infection or recent significant sun exposure. Sudden excess hair growth, especially with other hormonal changes, warrants medical evaluation rather than cosmetic treatment alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which wavelength and settings suit your skin and hair, who will perform the treatment, how cooling is used, and what changes in pigment or hair growth are possible. Ask whether a medical cause of excess hair should be checked and how you should prepare between sessions.

Questions people ask
Are all laser hair-removal devices interchangeable?
No. Their wavelengths, spot sizes, cooling systems and settings differ, so selection should be individualised.
Can laser hair removal treat ingrown hairs?
It may reduce hair regrowth that contributes to ingrown hairs, while active inflammation still needs appropriate assessment.
