Types of immunotherapy for lung cancer

Checkpoint inhibitors target signals that can stop immune cells from attacking cancer. Different medicines act on different checkpoints, and they may be used as a single treatment, alongside chemotherapy, or after another treatment. The plan can differ for non-small-cell and small-cell lung cancer and may change with stage.

Before treatment, the team reviews the biopsy, scans, tumour markers and medical history. Immunotherapy is not suitable for every person. Existing autoimmune illness, organ problems, medicines and previous treatment can affect the discussion.

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention autoimmune disease, transplant history or steroid use. Ask how the medicine will be given, how often visits occur, and which symptoms should be reported. Immune reactions can affect the skin, bowel, lungs, liver, thyroid or other organs, so early reporting matters.

Contact the oncology team promptly for new breathlessness, persistent diarrhoea, severe rash, yellowing of the skin, unusual weakness or reduced urine. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, chest pain or collapse. These symptoms have several possible causes, but some immune reactions need rapid treatment.
