Types of GERD

Typical reflux may cause a burning feeling behind the breastbone, a sour taste or fluid coming back after meals. Some people mainly notice throat clearing, hoarseness or Cough; these symptoms can have other causes and should not be attributed to reflux without assessment. Reflux can also disturb sleep when symptoms are worse after lying down.

A hiatus hernia can make reflux easier in some people, while pressure on the stomach, including that associated with Obesity, may contribute. GERD can occur with or without visible irritation, so symptom pattern and response to a treatment trial may both matter. Chest Tightness or Abdominal Pain has several possible causes and sometimes needs urgent evaluation.

Note when symptoms occur, what and how much you ate, and whether lying down makes them worse. Try smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and raise the head end of the bed if night symptoms persist. A clinician may recommend medicines that reduce acid or protect the oesophagus, then review whether they are helping. Persistent symptoms may need testing rather than repeated self-treatment.

Seek emergency help for new or severe Chest Tightness, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Arrange prompt medical review for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting or symptoms that do not settle. Night-time Cough with breathing difficulty also warrants assessment.
