Type 2 diabetes test at home: what to know

A finger-prick meter measures glucose in a small blood sample. The result is affected by timing, recent food, activity, illness, stress, medicines and testing technique. A single reading therefore needs context. A longer-term blood test arranged by a clinician gives a different view and is used alongside your history and examination.

Home testing is most useful for people who have been advised when and how to test, including those using treatments that can cause low glucose. It is not a reliable way to rule out diabetes when a result looks normal.

Wash and dry your hands, use an in-date strip, follow the meter instructions and record the reading with its timing and any symptoms. Do not share lancets or finger-prick devices. If a result is surprising, repeat it with clean, dry hands and seek professional advice rather than changing medicine yourself.

Arrange a clinic appointment for repeated unusual readings or symptoms such as thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision or unexplained tiredness. Take your meter and record to the appointment if possible.

Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, a seizure, severe dehydration, vomiting with deep breathing, or sudden one-sided weakness or speech difficulty. Contact a clinician promptly if readings repeatedly remain outside your agreed range, especially during illness.
