Type 2 diabetes mellitus without complications

Type 2 diabetes affects how the body uses insulin, allowing glucose to build up in the blood. “Without complications” describes what has been identified so far; it does not mean symptoms are impossible or that follow-up can stop. Some people feel well even when glucose is above target.

Routine checks look for changes involving the eyes, kidneys, feet, nerves, blood pressure, and cholesterol. A history of prediabetes or obesity may help explain risk, but neither determines how your diabetes will progress. Your care plan should match your medicines, other conditions, work, food habits, and daily routine.

Take medicines on the schedule agreed with your clinician and keep appointments for glucose review. Choose regular meals with vegetables, fibre-rich foods, and a suitable protein source; limit sugary drinks and avoid skipping meals when that could make your medicine unsafe.

Movement such as walking, swimming, or strength exercises can support glucose control when it is safe for you. Check your feet for blisters or breaks in the skin, keep a record of questions, and ask before changing medicines or starting supplements.

Contact a clinician promptly for repeated very high or low readings, new vomiting, confusion, severe dehydration, or inability to take medicines. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, sudden weakness on one side, trouble speaking, or severe breathlessness. A foot wound, spreading redness, or fever needs prompt assessment.

Ask how your treatment goals are set, which checks you need and when, and how illness or travel should change your plan. Ask how to recognise hypoglycaemia, when kidney and eye reviews are due, and whether your foot sensation and circulation need assessment.
