Type 2 diabetes mellitus with hyperglycaemia symptoms

When glucose remains in the bloodstream instead of moving into cells, the kidneys remove more water with it. This can make you urinate often and feel unusually thirsty. The same imbalance may leave you tired, make vision seem hazy, or cause headaches. Some people have few noticeable symptoms, so a glucose check is more reliable than how you feel.

A cut, blister, or sore may heal slowly when glucose is persistently high. Check your feet and skin regularly, especially if you have reduced sensation. Tingling or numbness can be a sign of peripheral neuropathy, while a warm, red, swollen area may need assessment for cellulitis.

Arrange a clinical review if these symptoms are new, persistent, or worsening. Record when they occur, what you have eaten, your medicines, and any home glucose readings if you monitor them. Take diabetes medicines as prescribed; do not double a missed dose unless your clinician has told you how.

Drink water unless a clinician has restricted your fluids, and avoid sugary drinks. Keep taking prescribed treatment while seeking advice. If you use insulin or medicines that can lower glucose, learn the difference between high glucose symptoms and hypoglycaemia.

Seek urgent medical help for vomiting, severe weakness, confusion, deep or rapid breathing, marked drowsiness, or inability to keep fluids down. These can signal a serious glucose imbalance or dehydration. Seek prompt care for a foot wound, spreading redness, fever, or skin that becomes painful and swollen.
