Type 2 diabetes and kidney stones: what to know

A kidney stone is a hard deposit that may move through the urinary tract. It can cause severe, wave-like pain in the side or back, pain spreading toward the groin, nausea, or blood in the urine. Burning urine and fever raise concern for infection rather than a simple stone. Increased thirst and frequent urination can reflect high glucose, so symptoms need context and testing.

Diabetes and kidney disease are not the same as kidney stones, although a person can have more than one kidney problem. A clinician may use urine testing and imaging to identify the cause and check kidney function.

Follow your diabetes sick-day plan during pain, vomiting or reduced eating, and check glucose more often if advised. Keep taking or pausing medicines only according to instructions. Sip fluids if you can keep them down, unless your clinician has restricted fluids. Do not rely on leftover antibiotics or pain medicines. Assessment can identify the stone's location and whether it is blocking urine flow or linked with infection.

Seek urgent help for side pain with fever or chills, inability to urinate, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or glucose symptoms that do not improve with your agreed treatment. Blood in urine or persistent pain also warrants prompt medical review, particularly when diabetes or known kidney disease is present.
