Two pea-sized lumps in the neck

Small lumps along the neck may be lymph nodes responding to an infection in the throat, ear, teeth or nearby skin. Tenderness and recent illness can provide useful context, but neither proves the cause. Cysts, thyroid lumps and salivary-gland conditions can feel similar. Lymphoma, thyroid cancer and head and neck cancer are additional possibilities that require clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

A clinician compares both lumps and checks their position, firmness, movement and skin. They may examine the mouth and throat, ask about tobacco or alcohol exposure and arrange an ultrasound, blood tests or a needle sample when appropriate.

Book a medical appointment if the lumps persist, enlarge, feel hard or fixed, return repeatedly or have no clear link with an infection. Write down when you first noticed them and whether they change with illness. Mention fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, swallowing trouble, ear pain or voice changes. Avoid poking them, which can make the area sore.

If the examination does not identify a simple cause, follow-up imaging or referral helps locate the source. A lump with an unclear origin is investigated in stages; its size alone cannot classify it.

Get emergency help if swelling causes difficulty breathing or swallowing saliva, or if it enlarges rapidly with severe pain or signs of a serious infection. Seek prompt review for coughing blood, persistent hoarseness, a lump above the collarbone or marked whole-body symptoms.

Ask whether the lumps feel like lymph nodes, whether an ultrasound or needle sample is needed, what changes should prompt earlier contact, and when the results and follow-up plan will be discussed.
