Two-finger diastasis recti: what it means

How the structures involved in Diastasis Recti differ from normal

Short answer

A two-finger gap between the abdominal muscles may be consistent with diastasis recti, but finger-width checks are only a rough guide and symptoms, muscle tension, and function matter too.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it is
Widening of the connective tissue at the abdominal midline

How to understand the gap

Diastasis recti is a widening and thinning of the connective tissue along the centre of the abdominal wall. It can occur during pregnancy and may remain after birth. When you lift your head or tense your abdomen, the midline may feel soft or show a ridge or doming. A gap alone does not measure strength, healing, or the effect on daily activities. Back discomfort, difficulty bracing, pelvic-floor symptoms, or a feeling of poor trunk support can be more useful reasons for assessment than the finger count.

Practical steps

Move gradually and breathe out during effort rather than holding your breath. Roll to your side when getting out of bed, and avoid repeatedly straining through a visible abdominal bulge. A physiotherapist can assess the abdominal wall, breathing, posture, lifting technique, and pelvic floor, then tailor exercises to your stage of recovery. Postnatal physiotherapy may be useful when the gap is associated with weakness, discomfort, or reduced confidence with movement. Avoid exercises that increase doming until a clinician has reviewed your technique.

When to seek care

Arrange assessment if the gap is painful, changing, associated with a pronounced bulge, or interfering with lifting, walking, exercise, or caring for your baby. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, vomiting, a firm tender bulge that will not reduce, or sudden illness. These symptoms may need evaluation for causes beyond diastasis recti.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how your abdominal wall is functioning, which movements are safe now, whether pelvic-floor symptoms are connected, and how progress will be assessed without relying only on finger width.

Questions people ask

Does a two-finger gap always need treatment?

Not necessarily. Management depends on symptoms, function, stage after birth, and examination findings.

Can exercise worsen diastasis recti?

Some movements may increase doming or pressure, so technique and progression should be individualised.
