What should you know about turf toe injury?

Short answer
A turf toe injury is a sprain around the big toe joint caused by forceful bending or repeated push-off.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance

- The joint where the big toe meets the foot

- Forceful upward bending or repeated push-off
- First priority
- Protect the toe and reduce painful loading
Understanding the injury
The tissues beneath the big toe joint help stabilise it during walking, sprinting and jumping. Turf toe can occur when the forefoot is fixed while the big toe bends upward, or after repeated loading during sport. Symptoms may include tenderness under the joint, swelling, bruising, reduced push-off and pain when the toe bends.
The severity can vary from stretched tissue to a more significant tear or joint displacement. An examination helps distinguish turf toe from a fracture, gout or another cause of Toe Pain. Hallux Rigidus is a different problem involving stiffness of the big toe joint.
Useful early measures
Stop the activity that triggered pain and choose footwear with a firm sole. Elevate the foot for swelling and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if comfortable and medically suitable. Avoid forcefully stretching the toe or testing it repeatedly. A clinician may recommend taping, a rigid insert, a boot or Splinting depending on the examination.
As symptoms settle, Physiotherapy may restore controlled movement, strength and balance. Returning to sport should be gradual, with walking and push-off comfortable before running or jumping resumes.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment promptly for marked swelling, bruising, inability to walk, a visible deformity or pain that is not easing with protection. Urgent care is appropriate for numbness, a cold or pale toe, an open injury or sudden severe pain after a forceful event.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether imaging is needed, which activities are safe now, whether you need a boot or tape, and how to judge readiness for sport. Ask how to protect the joint from another forced upward bend.

Questions people ask
Where does turf toe hurt?
Pain is often beneath or around the big toe joint and may increase during push-off or upward toe movement.
Should I keep playing through turf toe?
No. Continuing impact and push-off can irritate the injured tissues and delay recovery; use a clinician-guided return plan.
