What should you know about tunel flow cytometry?

Short answer
TUNEL flow cytometry labels DNA breaks in individual cells and uses flow cytometry to measure the pattern across a sample.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Signals from individual cells
How the method works
TUNEL stands for a laboratory reaction that attaches a detectable label to exposed ends of fragmented DNA. Flow cytometry then passes prepared cells through an instrument, measures signals from each cell, and groups cells according to their signal and other features. The result can show a distribution rather than a single reading.
DNA fragmentation may be associated with programmed cell death, tissue injury, or other processes. TUNEL signal is therefore interpreted with the sample type, controls, microscopy or pathology, and the clinical question. It does not identify a disease by itself.
What to expect from testing
The laboratory needs a suitable cell suspension, which may come from blood, a body fluid, or tissue processed into cells. Ask what sample is planned, whether a biopsy is needed, and whether the test is being used to assess cell death, treatment response, or another laboratory question.
You usually do not need to interpret the raw plot yourself. Ask for the conclusion in plain language, including what controls were used and whether the finding changes diagnosis or management. The test may be one part of a broader flow cytometry panel.
When to seek care
TUNEL flow cytometry itself does not usually create symptoms because it is performed on a collected sample. Seek care for symptoms related to the sampling procedure, such as persistent bleeding, increasing swelling, fever, severe pain, or worsening redness. After a bone marrow sample, urgent advice is needed for heavy bleeding or feeling faint.
Questions for your doctor
What question is this test intended to answer? What sample will be tested, and how was it prepared? How should the TUNEL signal be interpreted with the other flow cytometry findings? Will the result affect treatment, or is it exploratory information?
Questions people ask
Is TUNEL flow cytometry the same as ordinary flow cytometry?
It uses flow cytometry equipment, but adds a TUNEL reaction designed to label DNA breaks before the cells are measured.
Can this test diagnose cancer alone?
No. Its findings need laboratory controls and clinical correlation with other tests, which may include tissue examination or a bone marrow sample.
