What should you know about a tummy compression garment?

A compression garment wraps around the abdomen and applies pressure through elastic fabric. It may be considered after treatment or surgery when support, swelling management or comfort is part of rehabilitation. The garment should feel supportive rather than sharply painful, restrict breathing or cause numbness. It is not a treatment for an unexplained abdominal lump or sudden pain.

The right garment depends on body shape, skin condition, scars, swelling and the reason for use. A specialist may assess the abdomen, measure you and recommend a design that can be put on without pulling healing tissue. Compression garments are different from ordinary shapewear because their pressure and fit are selected for a clinical purpose.

Follow the prescribed wearing schedule and check your skin when the garment is removed. Keep the fabric clean and dry according to its care instructions, and inspect seams for folds that could rub. Put it on smoothly so pressure is even; avoid rolling the top or bottom edge into a tight band. If swelling is part of your recovery, ask whether lymphoedema therapy would complement the garment.

Do not share a fitted garment or alter it without advice. Tell the clinician about circulation problems, breathing disease, fragile skin, a healing wound, fever or a new area of pain before using compression.

Remove the garment and contact your care team if you develop increasing pain, pins and needles, numbness, colour change, marked swelling above or below the garment, skin breakdown or difficulty breathing. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fainting, chest pain or sudden breathlessness. Do not tighten the garment to manage symptoms that are getting worse.
