The grouped hairs are called tufting. It can occur when inflammation or infection damages follicles and causes nearby openings to join. Some people notice itchy scalp, pimples, skin bumps, drainage, or areas where hair becomes thinner. It is related to folliculitis, but the tufted pattern can signal deeper or longer-standing inflammation rather than a simple isolated spot.

A clinician may inspect the scalp closely and ask about tenderness, discharge, hair-care practices, and how quickly the change appeared. Do not pull out the tuft or scratch crusts, because this can further irritate follicles.

Arrange a dermatology assessment, particularly when the area is recurring, painful, draining, or associated with hair loss. Keep the scalp clean with a gentle cleanser, avoid tight hairstyles and harsh chemicals, and do not share combs, hats, or clippers. Treatment depends on whether bacteria, yeast, or another inflammatory process is involved. A clinician may consider topical antibiotic therapy or antibiotics for a skin infection when examination supports those options; do not self-start leftover medicine.

Seek prompt medical care if redness spreads, pain increases, pus develops, fever appears, or a rapidly enlarging tender area forms.
