What should you know about tuberculosis test for employment?

The process varies with the job, local policy, and your health history. It may include a questionnaire, skin or blood testing, a chest X-ray, or samples for laboratory testing when symptoms or a screening result call for them. A positive screening result does not automatically mean active TB, while a negative result does not replace medical review when symptoms are present. The service should explain which result is being reported and whether more assessment is required.

Follow the employer or occupational-health instructions about where to attend and whether a return visit is needed. Take identification and previous TB records if available. Tell the clinician about prior testing, TB treatment, exposure, pregnancy, immune-suppressing medicines, and HIV infection. Keep the written result and follow-up plan. If further testing is recommended, complete it before treating the employment form as settled.

Do not wait for a workplace appointment if you have a persistent cough, fever, night sweats, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or coughing up blood. Seek urgent help for severe breathing trouble or significant coughing of blood.
