What should you know about scarlet fever?

The rash may feel rough like fine sandpaper and can begin on the chest or abdomen before spreading. The face may look flushed while the area around the mouth stays paler. Fever, sore throat, headache, swollen glands, nausea or a coated tongue can occur. Symptoms overlap with other infections, so a clinician may examine the throat and decide whether testing or antibiotic treatment is appropriate.

Encourage fluids, rest and soft foods if swallowing hurts. Use fever or pain medicine only according to the label and a child’s age or weight instructions. If prescribed antibiotics, give every dose as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Wash hands, avoid sharing cups and towels, and keep the unwell person away from close contact until a clinician says they can return to normal activities.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for fever with a new rough rash, significant sore throat or swollen neck glands, especially after contact with someone who has strep throat. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, severe drowsiness, confusion, a purple or blistering rash, or signs of dehydration.
