What should you know about TSS rash?

Toxic shock syndrome is an uncommon but serious toxin-related illness that can worsen quickly. A rash may look diffuse, red, or sunburn-like, but appearance alone cannot confirm its cause. Fever, chills, muscle aches, vomiting or diarrhoea, dizziness, confusion, low blood pressure, or later peeling can occur with severe illness. Many rashes instead reflect contact dermatitis, heat rash, a drug rash, or another condition. Atopic dermatitis often causes itchy, dry inflamed patches; psoriasis may form thicker scaly plaques; ringworm can expand in a ring; and scabies often causes intense itch with a distribution that helps diagnosis.

If the rash appeared with sudden fever or feeling seriously unwell, seek emergency medical care rather than treating it as simple irritation. Tell clinicians about recent medicines, wounds, surgery, skin infections, tampon or menstrual product use, and any rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not insert or keep using a tampon or menstrual cup while waiting for advice if toxic shock syndrome is a concern. Avoid starting leftover antibiotics or steroid creams, since they can obscure the appearance without treating the underlying emergency. Photograph the rash only if this does not delay care.

Call emergency services for a rash with fainting, confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, blue or grey skin, severe pain, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening illness. Urgent assessment is also needed for high fever with widespread redness, especially after an operation, wound, or retained menstrual product. A stable itchy rash without systemic symptoms still deserves a routine review if it persists, spreads, or follows a new medicine.

Ask which features make the rash urgent, whether a medicine or exposure could explain it, and what examination or tests are needed. Ask how to care for the skin while waiting, which products to avoid, and what change should prompt immediate reassessment.
