Tru-cut breast biopsy: what to expect

The clinician cleans the skin, gives local anaesthetic, makes a small opening, and places the needle while watching the target with ultrasound or another imaging method. A clicking sound may occur as cores are taken. Pressure or bruising can follow, and a tiny marker may be left so the area can be found later. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, pregnancy, and implanted devices. Follow their instructions about medicines and bathing. Afterward, use the recommended dressing and avoid strenuous activity for the advised period. Contact the clinic for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, drainage, worsening pain, or fever. Seek urgent care for severe chest symptoms, fainting, or a rapidly expanding breast swelling.
