What should you know about triple test amniocentesis?

The triple test combines pregnancy-related blood markers with other information to estimate whether further assessment may be useful. It does not diagnose a condition. Amniocentesis uses a thin needle, guided by ultrasound, to collect a small sample of amniotic fluid. The sample can be analysed for particular genetic or chromosomal conditions. Your clinician should explain which tests are being offered and what their results can and cannot show.

Amniocentesis is different from NIPT, which analyses placental DNA in a blood sample, and from chorionic villus sampling, which samples placental tissue. These options differ in timing, information provided, and procedure-related considerations.

Ask what prompted the recommendation, which conditions the test covers, and how a result could affect your care. Tell the team about medicines, bleeding problems, allergies, and any concerns about the procedure. You may want a support person with you and time afterwards to rest. Arrange a clear way to receive results and ask who will explain them.

After amniocentesis, contact your maternity team urgently if you develop heavy bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, fever, worsening abdominal pain, contractions, or feel suddenly unwell. Follow the specific aftercare instructions given by the service performing the procedure.
