What should you know about triple laminectomy?

A lamina is the back portion of a vertebra. Removing selected laminae is called laminectomy, or spinal decompression surgery. The word triple means that the planned decompression covers three levels, which may be next to one another. It does not by itself describe whether a disc procedure or fusion is also needed.

Surgeons consider this approach when narrowing around the spinal canal contributes to pain, numbness, weakness, walking difficulty, or pressure on the spinal cord. Spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis are examples of conditions that may be part of the assessment. Imaging and an examination help identify which levels matter.

Before surgery, share your medicines, allergies, previous operations, and any change in strength or bladder or bowel control. Arrange help with meals, bathing, and transport while movement is limited. Afterward, follow the wound and activity instructions, walk in short regular periods as advised, and avoid lifting or twisting until your team gives clearance. Rehabilitation is adjusted to your symptoms and the operation performed.

Ask whether an endoscopic spine surgery option is relevant to your anatomy; a smaller approach is not suitable for every level or pattern of compression.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing weakness, new loss of sensation, worsening difficulty walking, fever, wound drainage, or pain that suddenly changes. Seek urgent help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly progressing weakness.
