What should you know about trigger thumb pain?

Short answer

Trigger thumb pain can come from irritation and thickening around the thumb tendon, causing soreness, clicking, or difficulty straightening the thumb.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the symptoms may mean

You may notice tenderness in the palm at the base of the thumb, a catching sensation when bending or straightening, or a thumb that briefly locks. Symptoms can be more noticeable after gripping, pinching, or repeated hand use. A clinician can examine the tendon pathway and the thumb's movement to distinguish this pattern from joint arthritis, an injury, or nerve-related pain.

Pain at the thumb side of the wrist is a different pattern and may be linked with De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. Because several hand problems overlap, the location of pain and the movement that triggers it are useful details to record.

What you can do now

Reduce repeated forceful gripping and pinching for a while, and change tasks so the thumb can rest between activities. Keep the hand gently moving within a comfortable range rather than repeatedly forcing a stuck thumb straight. A clinician or hand therapist may recommend a temporary support, exercises, or another treatment after checking the thumb.

Note when clicking or locking occurs, where the tenderness sits, and whether symptoms are present at rest. Do not insert objects into the painful area or use forceful stretching. If pain followed a cut, crush, or direct blow, mention that history promptly.

When to seek care

Book an assessment if thumb pain persists, keeps returning, interferes with grasping, or causes repeated locking. Seek urgent care after a significant injury, if the thumb looks deformed, or if you cannot move it. Rapid swelling, spreading redness, warmth with fever, a deep wound, numbness, or a pale or blue thumb also needs prompt attention.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is the pain coming from the tendon, the thumb joint, or the wrist? What movements should I modify? Would a support or hand therapy help? How long should I try activity changes before review? What symptoms would mean I need faster assessment?

Questions people ask

Why does my thumb click when I move it?

A tendon may be moving through a narrowed or irritated area, which can create catching or clicking during thumb movement.

Should I force a locked thumb straight?

No. Forcing it can increase irritation; rest the thumb and arrange an assessment if locking continues or affects use.
