Trichomoniasis or a Yeast Infection? What to Know

Vaginal thrush, also called a yeast infection, is linked to an overgrowth of Candida yeast. Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. Both may involve itching, irritation or discharge, so colour, smell and symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

Thrush often causes vulval soreness and itching, while trichomoniasis may cause irritation, discomfort when passing urine or a change in discharge. The same person can have more than one condition, and another cause such as bacterial vaginosis or an STI can look similar.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms are new, strong, recurring, follow sexual contact, or do not improve after treatment. A clinician may examine the area and take a swab or urine sample. Do not rely on an old diagnosis to explain a new episode.

Use only treatment recommended for the confirmed or most likely cause. Antifungal treatment for thrush does not treat trichomoniasis, and STI treatment may require partner assessment. Until the cause is clearer, avoid products that irritate the vulva and consider pausing sex if it worsens discomfort.

Get prompt medical advice for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, sores, unusual bleeding, pregnancy with concerning symptoms, or severe vulval pain. Seek review if symptoms return after treatment, because the diagnosis may need checking or a partner may also need care.
