What should you know about trichomoniasis when pregnant?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection that may cause discharge, itching, burning, soreness, or discomfort when urinating or having sex. Some people have no symptoms. Changes in discharge can also be normal in pregnancy or caused by another condition, so appearance alone cannot identify trichomoniasis.

Tell your midwife, obstetrician, family doctor, or sexual-health clinician about symptoms and any possible exposure. They can select an appropriate test and explain the implications for you and the pregnancy.

Contact your antenatal team promptly if you think you may have trichomoniasis or if a partner has been diagnosed. Do not take leftover or non-prescribed medicine. If treatment is recommended, follow the pregnancy-specific instructions and ask how partners should be assessed.

Avoid douching and fragranced washes. Until you receive advice, pause sexual contact or follow the barrier and partner guidance given by your clinician. Ask whether additional sexually transmitted infection tests are appropriate.

Seek prompt pregnancy care for pelvic pain, fever, bleeding, sores, painful urination, fluid leakage, contractions, or a noticeable change in fetal movement. Severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding needs urgent assessment. Do not wait for discharge or itching if a pregnancy warning sign is present.

Ask which test is suitable, what treatment is recommended in pregnancy, whether your partner needs care, when sex can resume, and whether follow-up testing is needed.
