Trichomoniasis and oral sex

Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite that commonly infects the genital tract. Genital exposure is the main concern, while oral-sex questions depend on the contact involved and on whether anyone has symptoms or a confirmed diagnosis. A clinician can explain which sites need testing instead of assuming every sexual contact carries the same risk.

Tell the clinician exactly what kind of sexual contact occurred, when it happened, and whether a partner has tested positive. If infection is confirmed, take the prescribed treatment as directed. Partners may need evaluation and treatment to reduce the chance of passing the infection back and forth. Seek prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, unusual bleeding, faintness, or symptoms during pregnancy. These signs need assessment even when the suspected exposure was oral sex.

Arrange follow-up if symptoms remain after treatment or a partner has not been treated. Ask whether other sexually transmitted infection tests are appropriate for the contact you describe.
