Can trichomoniasis happen without sex?

The infection is associated with genital contact and can be present with few or no symptoms. Because symptoms may be absent and timing is not always clear, a diagnosis should not be used on its own to assign blame or determine when transmission occurred.

Toilets, towels, swimming pools, casual touching, and shared household items are not typical explanations. If there has been no sexual contact, tell the clinician exactly what happened and ask whether repeat testing or a different diagnosis should be considered.

Take the prescribed treatment as directed and avoid sex, or use the clinician's recommended precautions, until treatment instructions are complete. Current and recent partners may need assessment and treatment so the infection is not passed back and forth.

Do not self-treat vaginal discharge or itching with an over-the-counter product unless a clinician has advised it. Keep a note of symptoms, treatments, and dates to support a calm, accurate consultation.

Arrange prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, unusual bleeding, pain during pregnancy, or symptoms that worsen after treatment. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, or a sudden serious reaction to medicine.

Ask how the result was confirmed, whether other infections should be tested, whether partners need treatment, how to protect your privacy, and when follow-up is needed. If treatment involves antibiotics, ask about missed doses and side effects.
