What should you know about what causes trichomoniasis?

The parasite can infect the vagina, cervix, urethra or penis. Transmission can occur during sex even when the infected person has no symptoms. It is not caused by being unclean, and it is not the same as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.

A change in vaginal discharge or vaginal itching may occur, but these symptoms have many possible causes. The symptom is a presentation that can occur with trichomoniasis; it does not establish that trichomoniasis is the cause.

Arrange testing if you have symptoms, a new diagnosis in a partner, or another reason to suspect exposure. A clinician can choose a urine or genital sample and explain the result. If infection is confirmed, use the prescribed medicine as directed and ensure recent partners receive advice and treatment. Waiting for symptoms to disappear without assessment can allow ongoing transmission.

Use condoms or another barrier method consistently to reduce exposure, and follow advice about avoiding sex while treatment is underway. Do not share prescription medicine or use an unrelated antibiotic.

Seek prompt assessment for pelvic pain, fever, unusual bleeding, painful urination, or symptoms during pregnancy. Urgent care is needed for severe lower-abdominal pain, fainting, heavy bleeding or a marked deterioration in your condition.

Ask how the infection was identified, whether other sexually transmitted infections should be checked, how partners should be notified, and when repeat assessment is needed if symptoms remain.
