What does trichomoniasis discharge look like?

The discharge linked with trichomoniasis can look different from your usual pattern and may have an unpleasant smell. It may occur with vulval irritation, vaginal itching, soreness, burning during urination, or discomfort during sex. Some people have no symptoms at all.

These features are not unique to trichomoniasis. Changes in discharge can also result from other infections, changes in the vaginal environment, irritation, or a retained object. Book an appointment with a sexual-health clinician or gynaecologist if the change is new, persistent, or follows sexual contact without a barrier. Note the colour, texture, smell, timing, itching, urinary symptoms, and any pelvic discomfort; these details help guide assessment.

Do not douche or use perfumed products to mask the smell. If trichomoniasis is diagnosed, use the prescribed treatment as instructed and follow advice about partner assessment. Pause sexual contact until you have clear guidance about completing treatment and preventing reinfection.

Seek prompt care for discharge with pelvic pain, fever, sores, bleeding outside your period, or pain when passing urine. If you are pregnant and notice new discharge or irritation, contact your maternity or medical team. Severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or rapidly worsening symptoms require urgent help.

Ask what testing you need, whether you should avoid sex while awaiting results, whether partners need treatment, whether other sexually transmitted infections should be tested, and when persistent discharge should be reviewed again.
