Trichomoniasis: symptoms and the word “birds”

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection. Some people notice unusual vaginal discharge, genital itching, soreness, burning, or discomfort when passing urine; others have no noticeable symptoms. In people with a penis, irritation inside the penis, discharge, or burning with urination can occur. These symptoms are not specific to trichomoniasis.

“Birds” may be a typing mistake, an autocorrect result, or a search phrase about an unrelated animal condition. It does not change how human trichomoniasis is assessed. A clinician uses symptoms, sexual history, examination, and suitable testing rather than a keyword to diagnose it.

Arrange testing if you have new genital symptoms or a partner has been diagnosed. Avoid putting scented products or unprescribed medication inside the vagina, and consider avoiding sex or using condoms until you receive advice. If confirmed, take treatment as prescribed and ask about partner assessment to reduce reinfection.
