Trichomoniasis and your period

Trichomoniasis may cause discharge, itching, irritation, burning, or discomfort when passing urine. Menstrual blood can temporarily make discharge harder to judge, and symptoms may become more noticeable when products, moisture, or irritation are added. A late, early, heavier, or lighter period has many possible explanations and is not a reliable sign of trichomoniasis.

A clinician can discuss the best time and method for testing, because the presence of bleeding may affect how a sample is collected or interpreted. If symptoms began after sex or continue after the period ends, mention the timing and any recent treatment.

Record when the symptoms and bleeding started, the change in discharge, any urinary discomfort, and medicines already taken. Arrange an assessment rather than treating presumed thrush or BV without advice. Until results and treatment guidance are clear, consider avoiding sex or use condoms.

Seek prompt medical care for severe pelvic pain, fever, faintness, vomiting, bleeding after sex, bleeding that feels unusually heavy for you, or pregnancy with new genital symptoms. These features need assessment for causes beyond a routine period or uncomplicated trichomoniasis.

Ask whether testing can be done during bleeding, whether other infections should be checked, when sex can resume, and what follow-up is needed if discharge or irritation persists.
