Are trichomoniasis and giardiasis related?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite in the genital tract. It may cause discharge, genital itching, irritation, burning, or discomfort when passing urine, although symptoms can be absent. Giardiasis is an intestinal infection that can cause diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, gas, nausea, and greasy or foul-smelling stools.

The similar-sounding names describe different organisms and routes of spread. A bowel illness does not diagnose a genital infection, and genital discharge does not diagnose giardiasis. If symptoms overlap or you are unsure where they began, a clinician can choose tests based on the affected body area and your exposure history.

For genital symptoms, arrange a sexual-health or gynaecology assessment and avoid using someone else’s medicine. For diarrhoea or digestive symptoms, seek medical advice about hydration and stool testing, especially if symptoms persist or follow travel or unsafe water exposure.
