Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite and may cause discharge, itching, soreness, burning during urination, or discomfort with sex. Symptoms can overlap with other vaginal infections, so a home guess may lead to the wrong medicine. Vaginal itching is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

At home, you can keep the area dry, wash gently with lukewarm water, choose breathable underwear, and avoid products that sting or fragrance the vulva. These steps may improve comfort but do not remove the parasite. Avoid inserting household substances, douching, or using someone else’s antibiotics.

Book a clinician or sexual-health appointment for testing and prescription treatment. Share your medicines, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any symptoms affecting your partner. Take the prescribed course as directed and do not stop because discharge or itching has improved.

Avoid sex until you and recent partners have completed treatment and you have received advice about resuming sexual activity. Partners may need treatment even without symptoms. If you are uncomfortable, ask about suitable symptom relief rather than adding an over-the-counter vaginal product that could mask another condition.

Seek prompt care for pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, unusual bleeding, pain in pregnancy, or marked weakness. Arrange review when symptoms persist after prescribed treatment, return later, or worsen. Urgent assessment is also sensible when severe pain or faintness accompanies genital symptoms.
