Trichomoniasis is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Possible presentations include a change in vaginal discharge, genital itching or soreness, discomfort when urinating, or pain during sex. The discharge and irritation can resemble other vaginal infections, so symptoms cannot identify the cause by themselves.

Testing may involve a vaginal swab or another sample selected by a clinician. A positive result means treatment is needed and gives an opportunity to discuss partner care and testing for other sexually transmitted infections.

Book an appointment with a clinician or sexual-health service if you have symptoms or a partner has been diagnosed. Avoid douching and avoid self-treating with a medicine chosen from an old prescription, because similar symptoms can have different causes.

Use the prescribed treatment as directed. Follow advice about avoiding sex while treatment is underway and until partners have been assessed. If symptoms return, arrange review rather than repeating medicine without guidance.

Seek prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, pain during pregnancy, bleeding after sex, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. These signs can require assessment for pelvic infection or another problem alongside trichomoniasis.

Ask which test you need, whether your partner should be treated, when sex can resume, whether pregnancy changes the plan, and whether follow-up testing is recommended if symptoms continue.
