What should you know about trich in mouth?

Trichomoniasis is caused by Trichomonas vaginalis and most often affects the genital tract. It may cause vaginal discharge, genital itching, burning with urination or penile discharge, although many people have no symptoms. A sore throat, mouth ulcer, white coating or unusual taste has many possible explanations, including irritation, dental problems or another infection.

Oral symptoms do not confirm or exclude a genital sexually transmitted infection. If you have had a possible exposure, a clinician can choose tests based on the sites of contact and your symptoms.

Do not use leftover antibiotics or apply harsh products inside the mouth. Arrange a medical or dental assessment for persistent pain, sores, bleeding, swelling or difficulty eating. If a sexual partner has confirmed trichomoniasis, arrange sexual-health advice even if your mouth is the main concern.

If testing confirms trichomoniasis, follow the prescribed treatment and partner advice. Avoid sex until the treatment plan allows it and partners have been assessed. Ask whether testing for other sexually transmitted infections is suitable.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the tongue or face, dehydration, or rapidly spreading swelling. Prompt review is also sensible for a high fever, severe pain, or a mouth lesion that does not improve.

Ask whether the mouth finding needs a dental examination, which genital or site-specific tests fit your exposure, whether a partner needs treatment, and which warning signs should bring you back sooner.
