What should you know about trich in birds?

Bird trichomoniasis affects birds and is associated with organisms adapted to avian hosts. Human genital trichomoniasis affects the genital tract and is generally spread through genital sexual contact. Caring for, feeding, or seeing a bird does not usually explain genital symptoms such as discharge, itching, soreness, or burning when urinating.

If you have a new genital symptom, consider human health causes rather than assuming it came from an animal. Vaginal discharge and vaginal itching have several possible causes and are worth discussing with a clinician.

Arrange a medical assessment if symptoms persist or follow sexual exposure. Explain the symptoms, their timing, any pregnancy possibility, and relevant contact with partners. A clinician can choose testing that distinguishes trichomoniasis from other genital or urinary conditions.
