Treatment of Tetanus in Animals

Tetanus toxin affects the nervous system after bacteria enter a wound, sometimes a small puncture that is hard to find. Muscle stiffness, a rigid jaw, difficulty eating, an upright or startled appearance, painful spasms, and sensitivity to sound or touch may develop. Horses, dogs, cats, and other animals can be affected, but signs and treatment needs vary by species.

The illness can interfere with swallowing and breathing. It is not suitable for home treatment, and handling a frightened or spasming animal can injure both the animal and the caregiver.

Call a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately. Keep the animal in a quiet, dim, safe area and minimise noise, touch, and sudden movement. Do not force the mouth open, give food or liquid by mouth, or give human medicines. If transport is needed, follow the veterinary team’s instructions and use secure bedding that supports the body.

A veterinarian may clean or drain the wound, prescribe antibiotics, give antitoxin when appropriate, and use medicines to reduce spasms. Fluids, nutrition, bladder care, assisted breathing, and careful monitoring may be needed. Recovery can require prolonged nursing and depends on the animal’s condition.

Treat a suspected case as an emergency, especially when there is jaw stiffness, repeated spasms, trouble swallowing, collapse, noisy breathing, or increasing rigidity. Do not wait for a visible wound or for signs to become severe.

Ask the veterinarian whether nearby people or animals need advice after contact with the wound or saliva, and whether the animal’s preventive plan is current. Tetanus Vaccination is a separate prevention discussion and does not replace assessment of active neurological signs.
