What should you know about treatment of brucellosis in adults?

Brucellosis is an infection that can cause fever, night sweats, muscle aches, joint pain, and marked tiredness. Symptoms may come and go, and they can resemble other illnesses. Tell the clinician about unpasteurised dairy products, contact with livestock, animal tissue, or travel exposure because this helps guide testing.

A blood test and other clinical assessments may be used to support diagnosis. Treatment commonly uses more than one antibiotic because the infection can return if it is undertreated. The choice of medicines depends on pregnancy status, allergies, organ health, possible complications, and local clinical guidance.

Take each antibiotic at the prescribed time and complete the course unless the treating clinician changes it. Do not share doses or use leftover medicine. Report rash, breathing difficulty, severe diarrhoea, jaundice, or other concerning effects promptly, and ask whether any medicines or supplements should be separated.

Keep follow-up appointments even if fever settles. Record temperature changes, sweats, joint or back pain, fatigue, and new symptoms. Rest and drink enough fluid for your needs, while avoiding foods or drinks known to have caused the exposure until advice is given.

Seek urgent care for confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, persistent vomiting, or a rapidly worsening illness. A severe headache, stiff neck, or new neurological symptom also needs prompt assessment.
