Treatment for Trigger Finger Without Surgery

Trigger finger is a narrowing problem around the tendon that bends a finger. The tendon may catch as it passes through its pulley, causing clicking, stiffness or a finger that briefly locks in a bent position. Symptoms can be worse after gripping or on waking. A clinician usually diagnoses it from the symptom pattern and hand examination; other causes of finger stiffness may need separate assessment.

Reduce repeated gripping, tool use or activities that reproduce catching, while keeping comfortable finger movement. A night splint can hold the finger in a position that reduces tendon irritation. Hand therapy may guide gentle motion and changes to how you use the hand. A cortisone injection near the affected tendon sheath can reduce inflammation for some people. If locking remains frequent, the finger cannot straighten, or daily tasks are limited, discuss whether trigger finger release is appropriate rather than continuing ineffective self-care.

Book an assessment if catching persists, pain interferes with sleep or work, or the finger needs the other hand to straighten. Seek prompt care if the finger becomes fixed, swollen and hot, or you develop fever, spreading redness, numbness or a sudden injury. These features may point to a problem beyond routine trigger finger.
