Treatment for Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve root in the neck becomes irritated or compressed. It can cause neck or shoulder pain that travels into the arm, along with tingling, numbness or weakness in a particular pattern. Cervical spondylosis and a herniated disc are possible contributors, but examination is needed to identify the cause. A clinician may check reflexes, sensation, strength and neck movement, and may request imaging when symptoms persist, progress or need clarification.

Keep gently active and change positions regularly; prolonged bed rest can increase stiffness. Your clinician may recommend medication, heat or other symptom-relief measures after considering your health and current medicines. Physiotherapy may use posture advice, neck and upper-limb movement, nerve-friendly exercises and strengthening. Avoid forceful neck manipulation unless a qualified clinician has assessed you. Treatment is adjusted according to pain, sensation and strength rather than a fixed timetable.

Arrange medical review for persistent neck-to-arm pain, worsening numbness or symptoms that interfere with sleep, work or hand use. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing weakness, clumsy hands, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe headache with neck symptoms, or symptoms affecting both arms or legs. These signs need prompt neurological assessment.

Ask which nerve pattern is involved, whether the findings suggest cervical radiculopathy, which movements to avoid, how strength will be monitored, and when imaging or specialist review is needed.
