Treatment for pink eye caused by allergies

Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itchy, watery or red eyes, often affecting both eyes. Swelling and a clear discharge may occur after exposure to pollen, dust, animal dander, cosmetics or another irritant. Red Eye and Eye Discharge can also occur with infections, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Marked pain, reduced vision or strong Light Sensitivity is less typical of simple allergy and needs assessment.

Avoid the suspected trigger where practical, wash hands after outdoor exposure and avoid rubbing the eyes. Cool compresses and preservative-free lubricating drops may soothe irritation if suitable for you. Do not share towels, cosmetics or eye drops, and replace eye makeup used during a flare. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on an antihistamine or other allergy eye treatment. Antibiotic Treatment does not treat an allergy unless a separate bacterial infection is diagnosed. Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, sudden vision change, injury, marked swelling, a one-sided severe reaction, or strong sensitivity to light. Arrange prompt review if there is thick discharge, symptoms are worsening, contact lenses are involved, or the problem does not improve after avoiding a suspected trigger. Do not use someone else's prescription drops, especially steroid drops, because the wrong treatment can worsen some eye conditions.
