Treatment for Loose Pedicle Screws

Pedicle screws anchor rods or other implants to the bones of the spine. Loosening can occur when the bone does not hold the screw firmly, when fusion has not united, or when forces continue across the operated area. Some people have local back pain or movement-related discomfort, while others have no clear symptoms. The surgeon considers your examination, previous operation, timing, X-rays or CT, and signs of infection or nerve irritation.

Keep the surgical team informed about new or persistent pain rather than changing activity or using a brace without advice. Bring prior scan reports and a medication list to review. The team may monitor a stable, symptom-free finding with examinations and imaging, while checking whether the fusion is progressing. If the screw causes symptoms, threatens alignment, irritates a nerve, or accompanies a non-union, revision may involve removing or replacing hardware, improving the bone bed, extending fixation, or revising the fusion. The exact plan depends on the spinal level and the reason for the original surgery.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, a new change in posture, wound redness or drainage, fever, or pain that suddenly changes character. Seek emergency care for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or severe pain after a fall. These symptoms need assessment because nerve compression, infection, or another spinal problem may require timely treatment.
