Treatment for itchy eyes due to allergies

Allergic eye inflammation can cause itching, watering, redness, puffiness and a gritty feeling, often in both eyes. It may occur alongside sneezing, a runny nose or an itchy throat. Allergic conjunctivitis is one possible explanation. Pollen, house dust mites, pets and other airborne triggers can be involved, so the timing and setting of symptoms can provide useful clues. Itching strongly favours irritation or allergy, but it does not confirm the cause.

Do not rub your eyes; rubbing can increase inflammation and may scratch the surface. Apply a cool, clean compress and rinse your face after outdoor exposure. Keep windows closed during high-pollen periods when practical, wash bedding regularly if dust mites are suspected, and keep pets away from the bedroom if they trigger symptoms. A pharmacist may recommend lubricating drops, antihistamine drops or another allergy medication. Check whether drops are suitable for you, avoid sharing them, and remove contact lenses until the eyes feel comfortable. Allergic rhinitis, pet allergy or house dust mite allergy may need attention when nose symptoms or a clear household trigger accompany the eye problem.

Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, marked light sensitivity, a sudden change in vision, injury, chemical exposure or severe swelling. Arrange a review if one eye is affected with discharge, symptoms keep returning despite treatment, or the cause is uncertain. These features can point away from a straightforward allergy.

Ask which trigger is most plausible, whether your current drops are appropriate, how long to use them and whether contact lenses should be paused. Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, vision changes, asthma, eczema and any medicines you use.
