Treatment for colds and cough

Short answer
Treatment for colds and cough usually focuses on rest, fluids, symptom relief, and watching for warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main approach
- Rest, fluids, and relief of troublesome symptoms
- Antibiotics
- Not useful for a viral cold unless a clinician identifies a bacterial infection
- Safety check
- Review combination products to avoid repeating an ingredient
The short answer
A cold often settles with supportive care, while a cough can linger after other symptoms improve. Treatment depends on the cause, your age, existing conditions, and any medicines you already take.
What treatment means
A blocked or runny nose, sore throat, mild fever, and cough commonly occur together during a common cold. Coughing helps clear mucus and irritation from the airways, so suppressing every cough is not always useful.
Warm drinks, water, rest, and humidified air may make symptoms easier to manage. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and children over one year old; never give honey to an infant under one year. Avoid smoke and vaping, which can irritate the airways.
Antibiotics do not treat viral colds. A cough that follows a viral illness can also occur with acute bronchitis, but a persistent or recurring cough may have another cause, such as acid reflux, allergic rhinitis, asthma, or chronic cough.
What you can do
Choose simple measures first: drink regularly, rest, use saline nasal drops or spray for congestion, and consider paracetamol for discomfort or fever if it is suitable for you. Follow the package directions and check combination cold products so you do not take the same ingredient twice.
Ask a pharmacist before using cough or cold medicines for a child, during pregnancy, or if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, glaucoma, or take regular medicines. Keep medicines out of children’s reach, and do not use someone else’s prescription.
If symptoms are not improving, keep returning, or interfere with sleep and daily activities, arrange a clinical review. Take note of when the cough began, whether it is dry or produces mucus, and what makes it worse.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, coughing blood, or difficulty staying awake. Get prompt medical advice for a very unwell child, dehydration, or a high fever that does not settle.
Arrange an assessment if the cough lasts beyond the expected recovery period, is getting worse rather than better, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or occurs with wheezing, weight loss, night sweats, or repeated chest infections. People with asthma, significant lung disease, a weakened immune system, or other long-term conditions may need advice sooner.
A cough can be linked to conditions such as acute bronchitis, asthma, bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis, or chronic cough. These possibilities cannot be confirmed from the cough alone; an examination helps determine whether testing or targeted treatment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: What is the most likely cause of my cough? Which medicines are safe with my current treatment? Do I need an examination or tests? What warning signs should prompt urgent care? Could reflux, allergies, asthma, or another airway condition be contributing?

Questions people ask
Do I need antibiotics for a cold and cough?
Usually not. Colds are commonly viral, and antibiotics do not treat viruses. A clinician can assess you if symptoms are severe, prolonged, or suggest another infection.
What can soothe a cough at home?
Fluids, warm drinks, rest, avoiding smoke, and honey for adults and children over one year may help. Check with a pharmacist before giving cough medicines to a child.
When should a cough be checked?
Arrange medical advice if it is worsening, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or comes with breathlessness, wheezing, chest pain, coughing blood, or marked illness.
