Treatment for bedbug bites

Bedbug bites are skin reactions after insects feed, often leaving itchy red bumps or clusters on exposed areas. New marks may appear after sleeping, but the timing and appearance can vary. A bite pattern alone cannot confirm bedbugs because other insects, eczema, hives, and contact reactions can look similar.

Scratching can break the skin and allow a secondary infection to develop. The lasting solution is environmental control: inspect the mattress, bed frame, seams, and nearby furniture, and arrange qualified pest treatment when an infestation is suspected.

Wash the affected skin gently, keep fingernails short, and use a cool compress to calm irritation. A clinician or pharmacist may suggest oral antihistamine treatment for itch or topical corticosteroids for inflamed spots, depending on your age, health, and the body area involved. Follow label or professional directions and avoid applying products to broken skin unless advised.

Wash or heat-treat suitable bedding and clothing according to care instructions, vacuum mattress seams and nearby areas, and avoid moving infested items to another room. Treating the skin without addressing the sleeping environment can lead to new bites.

Seek medical advice if itching is severe, sleep is being disrupted, bites cover a large area, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Get prompt help for spreading redness, warmth, increasing pain, pus, fever, or red streaks, which may indicate infection. Emergency care is needed for swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction.
