Treatment for angioedema of the lips

Angioedema is swelling in deeper layers of the skin or lining tissues. On the lips, it may develop over minutes or hours and can occur with hives, itching, or swelling elsewhere. Triggers include an allergic reaction, a medicine, an infection, or a tendency to recurrent swelling without hives. The appearance alone does not identify the cause, so tell a clinician what you ate, took, applied, or were exposed to before the episode.

A record of timing matters. Note whether the swelling followed a new medicine, food, insect contact, cosmetic product, or physical trigger, and whether similar episodes have happened before.

Stop using a suspected new product or medicine only after obtaining appropriate medical advice about prescribed medicines, and arrange assessment for new or recurrent swelling. A clinician may recommend oral antihistamine treatment when histamine is involved. Oral corticosteroid treatment may be considered for selected episodes, but it is not suitable for everyone and should not delay emergency care.

Keep a simple trigger and symptom record, avoid scratching or irritating the lips, and follow any personalised emergency plan you have been given. Do not rely on home treatment if symptoms are progressing.

Call emergency services immediately if lip swelling is accompanied by swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, a hoarse voice, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction involving the airway. If swelling is isolated but new, marked, recurrent, or associated with hives, arrange prompt medical review to identify the trigger and plan future care.

Ask whether the episode fits histamine-related angioedema, whether a medicine could be involved, what warning signs require emergency action, and whether you need an individual rescue plan. Ask how to document triggers and which medicines you should avoid until the cause is clearer.
