Treating Perioral Dermatitis in Pregnancy

Perioral dermatitis causes small red bumps, dryness, burning or sensitivity around the mouth; it may also affect the nose or eyes. It can resemble pimples, eczema or contact irritation. Topical corticosteroids may temporarily calm redness but can maintain or worsen perioral dermatitis, so do not start, stop or restart one during pregnancy without medical guidance.

Arrange an assessment with your dermatologist, GP or maternity clinician and mention every cream, supplement and medicine you use. Keep cleansing gentle, avoid scrubs and fragranced products, and pause new cosmetics that sting. Use a simple moisturiser if tolerated and avoid picking the bumps. The clinician may discuss topical antibiotic therapy or another pregnancy-appropriate option; oral antibiotics for acne are not automatically suitable for this condition or during pregnancy.

Seek review if the rash reaches the eyes, causes eye pain or vision changes, becomes swollen or crusted, or spreads quickly. Contact your clinician if symptoms interfere with eating, sleep or daily comfort, or if the rash worsens after changing a steroid cream. A persistent or uncertain rash needs assessment because several facial conditions look alike.
