How to treat a stye early

A stye is a tender, localised swelling around an eyelash follicle or eyelid gland. It may look like a small red bump and can cause watering, soreness or a gritty feeling. It is different from general [Red Eye](/symptoms/red-eye/), although the surrounding eye may look red. Sticky material or crusting can occur; see [Eye Discharge](/symptoms/eye-discharge/) if discharge is a prominent feature.

Wash your hands, soak a clean cloth in comfortably warm water, wring it out and rest it over the closed eyelid for several minutes. Re-warm the cloth as it cools and repeat through the day. Keep the eyelid clean, avoid rubbing, and pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the area has settled. Do not pop, pierce or press the lump, because this can irritate tissue and spread infection. Use a fresh cloth and do not share towels.

Arrange a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) if the swelling is worsening, keeps returning, does not begin settling, or makes it difficult to open the eye. Seek urgent assessment for blurred or reduced vision, marked pain, light sensitivity, fever, or redness and swelling spreading beyond the eyelid. A clinician can check whether another eyelid or eye problem is causing the symptoms.
