What should you know about trapezium wrist pain?

The trapezium is a wrist bone at the base of the thumb. Pain in this area can follow repetitive gripping, a twist, a fall, joint wear or irritation in nearby tendons. Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index or middle finger points toward a nerve problem such as carpal tunnel syndrome, while pain along the thumb side can occur with De Quervain's tenosynovitis.

After a fall, swelling and marked tenderness may indicate a distal radius fracture or another injury. Hand osteoarthritis can cause aching, stiffness and pain when the thumb-base joint is loaded.

Rest from painful lifting and pinching, but keep the fingers and wrist moving gently within comfort. A thumb-and-wrist support may reduce load during tasks. Use a wrapped cold pack after a recent flare or injury. An examination can determine whether you need imaging, hand therapy or a different form of treatment.

Arrange a review when pain persists, wakes you, or restricts work and self-care. Seek urgent assessment after trauma when the wrist is deformed, rapidly swollen, very tender, weak, numb, cold or difficult to move.

Ask which tissue is most likely involved, whether an X-ray or other scan is needed, how long to use a support, and which symptoms should prompt faster review.
