What should you know about transient stroke meaning?

A sudden episode of facial drooping, arm or leg weakness, speech difficulty, vision change, loss of balance or numbness may be a transient ischaemic attack or a stroke. Symptoms can improve because blood flow returns, but the event remains a warning that the brain's circulation needs assessment. Risk factors include hypertension, atrial fibrillation and type 2 diabetes. Symptoms cannot safely be explained away because they were short-lived.

Use the FAST check: look for facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, and treat any sudden sign as an emergency. Note the exact time the person was last known well, call emergency services and keep them resting safely. Do not give food, drink or medicines unless instructed. Bring a list of medicines and medical conditions if it is readily available.

Call emergency services immediately for any new or returning stroke-like symptom, even if it disappears before help arrives. Sudden severe headache, collapse, seizure, worsening confusion or difficulty swallowing also needs emergency care. Do not drive yourself. A clinician may arrange brain and blood-vessel assessment and review conditions such as atrial fibrillation or high blood pressure.
